party is divided and too weak to stop him in terms of doing what he wants to do. perhaps john boehner doesn't have the storm control and that will help in the second term. >> john: many would agree that john boehner has a tender hold at best on his caucus. >> absolutely. and you know, we talked about this last week when i came on, john. but you have a very divided political conference one divided between republicans that are in blue states, states voting for president obama and red states states that voted or mitt romney, and you can see the president attempting a divide and conquer to get policies through the hours in the next two to another years. >> john: it may be the first of the new term will that become what healthcare was in his first team he'll use tons of political capital just to get it done. >> i'm not sure that he will. even if that's what he wants some senate democrats are pulling back on the ambitious parts of that, the focus on the universal background checks, which a lot of people agree with. while obama has been bold and up front about this, i think it's something th

consensus. republican house speaker john boehner told newly reelected president obama he wants to see obama succeed. >> mr. president, this is your moment. we are ready to be led -- not as democrats or republicans, but as americans. we want you to lead. not as a liberal or conservative, but as president of the united states of america. we want you to succeed. challenge ourselves to find the common ground that has eluded us. let's rise above the dysfunctions and to the right thing together for our country. >> there you have house speaker john boehner. >> i appreciate the sentiment, but the words at the moment, we will see what kind of truth, what kind of authenticity there is behind those words when the president, now back in washington, sits down with republicans to deal with that word i hate, sequestration. when you start dealing with these cuts on the table -- with said many times, budgets are moral documents. when they get into the weeds about these numbers and about the priorities, we will see how strong sentiment comes through. >> my spontaneous response is i believe those words, and t

to happen. then, mitch mcconnell and john boehner came and said stop. i think people just thought that will happen because we elected him. we learned that. the president learned it. i think msnbc learned it and congress and the public most importantly learned it. that this just doesn't happen because of an election. it happens because of an election and then it means going online, it means doing rallies, it means educating your neighbors at church and the workplace and in school. >> now, you're using the word takers in this speech, i mean going right after the right and a reminder of people what the election was about. i looked right across at paul ryan when he said it. i mean, given the republicans parties and their positions right now, can he get this agenda done? >> i think republicans sometimes look to the next election, too. and when they think about how the demographics are changing, how the philosophy of young people is changing, i the they understand that when you're talking about this 47%, the takers, it's veterans and people who paid the medicare and realize it's workers

? >> reporter: alex, i think it changes the debate, because house speaker john boehner, remember, initially said that any increase in the debt limit had to be offset with dollar for dollar spending consults. so what happened over the past several days that the republicans essentially moved off of that point. they agreed to increase the debt limit without spending cuts to offset it. the provision, of course, is that in three months, they're sort of pressuring congress to get a budget deal passed, and if they can't essentially members of congress won't get paid. so that is what they are hoping will be the sticking point in this matter, but from the white house's perspective i think they see this as a victory. however, democrats not thrilled about the three-month extension and idea of increasing the debt limit ink kramentally. >> kristen welker from the white house. see you later. >> reporter: thank you. >>> white house correspondent for the hill, amy parns and political reporter lauren fox. hello, ladies. night to have you both. i'm glad to be here. fun to be in the studio with you. >> thank you.

inner billie bush. we wanted to see him stammering and blubbering like john boehner leaving production of les miserables. he denied bribing teammates and bribing people and denied doing steroids since 2006. coincidently the last year that the statute of limitations apply. he was lying all over the place. i don't think he helped himself at all last night. i came away liking him less than i did before the interview. >> bill: gutfeld, he has got legal problems all over the place. we talked about this with our is it legal duo earlier in the week. this makes it worse. because he basically is saying, you know, i sued the times of london, for example, he won a judgment. half a million dollars. but i was lying. the story they had was right. and i did it and now people suing him. i think there is a hair person or a masseuse or somebody who said look, he did it, and he went after her, and all of this business. now he loses all of those cases. and if he didn't say anything, at least he would have a chance. >> well, you know what? he only has one option left. and that is to enter politics. clearly

favorite inaugust ration moment was michelle obama sitting next to john boehner. shoots him the most disgusted look. it's like that is -- only a woman could pull that off. isn't that great? >> kimberly: eyeball roll. >> greg: did you doctor that? no. a woman is good at that. >> dana: that is why hillary clinton will be a good candidate. >> kimberly: ice it. >> bob: did you say that is the way you look at me? >> dana: sometimes. you have don't see me. >> bob: yes, i do. congratulations to bill and melinda gates who made enormous contributions but now they have a goal to eradicate polio from the earth. only one other disease eradicated was smallpox. we don't have polio in the united states much anymore. it's rampant in africa and asia. congratulate them for using the money the right way. >> dana: they are tireless. >> bob: they are. >> dana: they use their money in the right way when they hired all the people so more people have jobs. >> kimberly: we have new york goes zip we picked up. it's true. it's not gossip. >> bob: are youet

managing the finances of the united states of america. i think john boehner and eric cantor are doing a good job working together. i think we have to find ways to more carefully explain to people all year long why conservative principles work. i think they'll do that, and i look forward to working with them as governors do around the country in getting things done. >> do you think after newtown and the massacre there that things have changed on can't we find some middle place between the white house and congress on guns? >> i think the fist question, andrea, is what are the policy that is would actually work that would be able to help prevent the type of things at newtown. we have experience in virginia after the tragedy of virginia tech five years ago. governor cain and i worked well together on mental health, on reporting disqualifications, and we find a way i think that's made a difference. i've signed an executive order that have a school safety task force, and we're looking at a host of things, but it focuses on mental health school safety, on security -- about schools officers.

i'd get shot. bipartisan outreach will be so successful that even john boehner will consider becoming a democrat. after all, we have a lot in common. he is a person of color. although not a color that appears in the natural world. leaders of the republican party, they call the passage of this bill armageddon. end of freedom as we know it. so after i sign the bill, i looked around to see if there were any asteroids falling or sudden cracks opening up in the earth. turned out it was a nice day. they said we needed to triple the border patrol. well, now they're going to say we need to quadruple the border patrol or they'll want a higher fence. maybe they will need a moat. maybe they want alligators in the moat. lots of ups, lots of downs, except for my approval ratings which have just gone down. but that's politics. it doesn't bother me. besides, i happen to know that my approval ratings are still very high in the country of my birth. he seems all-american, but if you heard his real middle name, tim hosni pawlenty, what a shame. governor romney has said that he hoped a similar v

think we'd want to look at the language on that. john boehner's tone and his body language and everything i heard him say at the retreat in williamsburg, he and our leadership team was all about how we pull our conference together and work together. i don't think you'll see another bill come to the floor that's got that large a number of democrat votes we've seen in the past. i think it's going to be a republican agenda that he drives, and i think it's about unifying our conference. >> what about gun control? >> that's another situation that's rolling out in front of us. both of these issues, immigration and gun control, one of them, the immigration, was launched the morning after the election, before they actually analyzed the election polls. i think some republicans overreacted. gun control, the same thing. those people that wanted to confiscate guns, the anti-second amendment people took an opportunity as soon as the sandy hook tragedy took place. both of these things will be stretched out over time and come together. that's the only thing that should get to the presiden

to all house republicans and said your fight is not with john boehner, your fight is with james madison. he wrote this system this is the government we have. if you believe in the constitution, we have division of power. tough work within that to get an agreement. >> so, then frame that for me as words in a speech tomorrow that the president's delivering. he has to say -- >> the speech tomorrow should be the big picture above it all, should not be specific policies. save it for the state of the union that is a more plebeian speech. the power of the inaugural speech, what you want to in your president. >> ari fleisher, nice to have you this afternoon. >> great to be here. >> so great to be here with you, of course, i'm john berman. >> thank you. >> thank you so much for joining us this special coverage of president obama's inauguration. >> of course, i'm soledad o'brien. our special coverage continues all afternoon. don lemon's going to be up next with more from here in washington, d.c. ♪ [ male announcer ] when we built the cadillac ats from the ground up to be the world's best sport

and the emergence once again of john boehner and eric cantor and their ability to block anything that he tries to get through congress. >> john boehner, who is just making his way right now to his seat at the inauguration ceremony. >> t know what percentage of vote he got to re-elect him? 100%. you know why? unlike newt gingrich who topple democratic speaker jim wright and tom foley, the democrats did not even field a candidate. in ohio, against john boehner, speaker of the house, his principal nemesis. then we wonder why he is so aggressive? see, this is where the problem is. what we need to focus on is, how we organize demands on president obama and the members of congress back home? there are only 536 of them. 650,000, men, women, and children in each congressional district. it is a fraction of those numbers, 1000, 2000, getting behind the kind of long overdue solutions in this country can begin to make it happen. you know what my motto is these days? we have got to realize it is a lot easier than we think. if we exaggerate the opposition as a reflection of our own self- imposed powerlessne

will be lying low getting out of town entirely. high-ranking republicans such as house speaker john boehner and majority leader erick kanter, who have ceremonial roles, will attend. as well representative paul ryan, who probably envisioned the inauguration much differently months ago when he was part of the republican presidential ticket. it is my obligation, ryan said at a republican retreat. a republican of tennessee, a member of the joined congressional committee on inaugural ceremonies said that it is about the peaceful transition or reaffirmation of power. this is the 57th time the the president of the u.s. has been sworn in, and it has always been done without a mall, without insurrection, without a coup. that is why, whether you voted for mitt romney or barack obama, americans will stop and watch the inauguration and celebrate tradition. even so, republicans will stay awake and will lead democrats revel in their absence. but if you are an elected leader, you have to be there, said a republican strategist. otherwise you would probably want to get out of town, three- day weekend and al

solve this problem together and the we has to be inclusive and has to include john boehner and the house and the senate. we've got to get government to work well together and the president's the leader and he's got to provide the leadership to make it happen of the he didn't do that very well in his first term. >> steve: sure. it would be great to see four years of that. mr. card, i know you have been involved in five inaugurations. you've served for three different presidents starting with ronald reagan and then 41 and then 43 as well. today, while we watch what's going on on the west face of the capitol, at the white house, whole bunch of people are reenergized because a lot of people get new offices, new assignments. plain how that works -- explain how that works behind the scene. >> it's sort of like new year's day. you're all excited and you make all kinds of promises that you're going to lose weight and exercise and it's very exciting. people get to move into offices. they shuffle around, get new phone numbers, new business cards. take an oath of office to help the president do his
